WAIKANAE BEACH HOME
The owners of this project first contacted us in 2002 with a brief requiring a home for them, as well as having the flexibility to cater for their children and grandchildren on weekends and holidays, and potential for a bed and breakfast business.
The new home had to make the most of views, outdoor living, and enhance the relaxed atmosphere of the beach community. Ensuites were required to three bedrooms and there needed to be a private study space as well as a private guest lounge.
Concept
The restrictions of this home dictated compact and simple planning. The house is located near the top of the site to maximize views over the nearby water and island as well as achieve views to the hills behind.
The garage and carport is detached and located at the front of the site to maximize outdoor living areas, and be consistent with the bach's that have accumulated along the coast over past years. Careful positioning of windows provide good quality of light and outlook, while maintaining privacy from the predominantly brick and tile neighbourhood.
Drama has been created with varying volumes and texture both internally and externally. Materials and detailing have been specified to take cues from the coastal environment and withstand the sometimes harsh conditions . Natural timber, rough masonry, and aluminium clad the building with the textured buttresses continuing inside the living and entry spaces.
Careful consideration was given to natural cooling and shading, and meeting the various needs of the occupants.
