Rosetta
Located on an elevated site in Raumati, this beach home enjoys sweeping views to both Kāpiti Island in the west and the Tararua Ranges to the east. SPACE Architecture Studio was commissioned to undertake a modest yet transformative renovation, reconfiguring the living, dining, kitchen, bathroom, and entry spaces, extending the living area, and replacing the existing asbestos roof.
The original layout had the communal areas well placed at the centre of the home, with access to outdoor spaces on both sides. However, inefficient circulation and storage compromised the usability of these spaces. Our redesign rationalised the internal plan, introduced clever joinery solutions, and created a stronger connection between indoor and outdoor living. The kitchen was relocated to the heart of the home, opening to the eastern garden and alfresco dining area, and designed as a place for both cooking and gathering. The island was conceived as a furniture piece, softening the kitchen’s presence and encouraging guests to linger.
A tucked-away dining alcove doubles as a discreet workspace, with concealed storage hidden behind wall panelling and an intentionally enclosed atmosphere. A small extension to the west introduces a sheltered veranda with bi-folding timber screens, referencing the character of a contemporary boatshed. This language continues inside, with whitewashed raftered ceilings, tongue-and-groove linings, and painted timber floors. Materials were chosen for durability and their ability to age gracefully — including hand-painted plywood, solid oak, oak-faced ply, polished concrete, and natural stone — responding to the client’s vision of a relaxed, elegant, beach-friendly home.
