Gusto

Located in a heritage-listed building in Petone, originally designed in 1935 by Edmund Anscombe, this restaurant fit-out was shaped by the constraints and responsibilities of working within a historically significant structure. All alterations were carried out with careful attention to the building’s original fabric, in close accordance with heritage guidelines.

Extensive remedial and fit-out work was undertaken to restore the interior to its former character, while reimagining it for contemporary dining. Original features — including timber panelling, floors, windows, doors, and intricate ceiling details — were revived and enhanced with new layers of colour, texture, and materiality. The addition of custom timber-panelled joinery in the reception and front-of-house areas echoes the original craftsmanship while introducing a tailored, modern warmth.

A palette of warm neutrals, rich timbers, and deep-toned patterned wallpapers adds depth and visual interest, creating a refined yet playful atmosphere. By day, the space feels light and relaxed; by night, it transforms into a rich and intimate dining experience.
